Baby's Plate designed by Hilda Cowham

Stock No. 474

A "BABY'S PLATE" designed by Hilda Cowham for Shelley from her 2nd series and introduced in 1927. Examples from this second series with the very art deco period stylized images of children playing are particularly scarce because this series coincided with the issuing of Mabel Lucie Attwell's children's china from 1926 onwards also by Shelley, which captured the imagination of the British public at that time.
So despite the excellence of Hilda Cowham's designs in their own right, the sudden demand for Mabel Lucie Attwell's children's china, determined Shelley's production and consequently minimised output of Hilda Cowham's chidren's china, and which was soon dropped.
This "BABY'S PLATE" is decorated with three little boys marching along, with drum, pipe and tray, (the last also pulling a small wooden horse on wheels), and with the printed rhyme
"BILLY WITH THE DRUM
SANDY WITH THE PIPE
TOMMY WITH THE TRAY
WE GO OUT EVERY DAY"
Marked also with the printed signature of Hilda Cowham (bottom right), and the words "BABY'S PLATE" printed on the bottom edge.
Condition fortunately is largely good, but with moderate wear commensurate with some use.
Marked in green to the base with "Shelley" within a shield, below which "ENGLAND", and in black with the Regd. No.731979

Diameter of bottom rim : 8 inches
Diameter of top rim 7.5 inches
