Shelley China Cake / Sandwich Plate - Mabel Lucie Attwell (Sold)

Stock No. 212

A 1920s /1930s Shelley cake or sandwich plate designed by Mabel Lucie Attwell. These Mabel Lucie Attwell large size plates from the 1920s / 1930s are becoming difficult to find. This example bears the inscription " No Mr. Fairy - that won't do - I don't want to make a fuss - A fairy house may well suit you - It won't fit us!". Condition is very good with slight wear. No repairs or damages excepting one small chip to back of plate which doesn't affect its display. Printed marks for Shelley (1920s / 1930s).

Although Shelley produced Mabel Lucie Attwell's designs up to 1939, Boo-Boos (the little green fairy/elfin folk) were phased out of the designs in the later 1930s. These old designs did re-surface on Shelley china after the war for a few years, but using different ceramic body shapes in some cases and a revised colour palate in others. Those later examples are marked "fine bone china" in the Shelley backstamp, which distinguish this and other pre-war examples that are just marked with the plain Shelley backstamp.
