HB Quimper Pecheur series Plate designed by Paul Fouillen - Sold

Stock No. 403

A scarce French faience plate made at the Hubaudiere Bousquet Quimper faiencerie in the 1920s and bearing a hand painted illustration, designed by Paul Fouillen from the highly desirable and sought after "Pecheur" (Fishermen) Series.
This plate is hand decorated with an illustration of a couple in traditional regional clothing pushing their cart along through the puddles, and with the caption "APRES L'ORAGE" (Fr. Trans. "After the storm").
The distinguishing features of this popular series is that the figures depicted are animated and involved in some daily activity, sometimes with a gently humourous slant - unlike the typically static and "wooden" figures that had largely been the norm on Quimper faience prior to this series.
Condition is very good with no discernable damages or wear.
Hand marked to the base with "QUIMPER - FRANCE" and a dot date code. Also the name "MARSHALL - FIELDS". (Marshall Fields was a large department store first opened in the late 19th century in Chicago. Later to become a a chain of stores and now known as Macys. They had clearly ordered the Pecheur Series plates for distribution in their U. S. stores - and thus their name also appears on the back of this example.
