1970s Indian on a Horse Teapot designed by Roger Michell (Sold)

Stock No. 449

Here is a rare 1970s Indian on a Horse Teapot designed by Roger Michell. The horse is in mid stride - actually balanced on only two legs - making this very difficult to fire in a kiln without collapsing.
This was the first figure on a horse teapot that Roger Michell designed in the 1970s to be followed by several other studio teapot series of mainly females riding horses designed and made in later years.
Teapots from all of these series are scarce as Roger never completed a limited edition of 100 - often many less. Roger indicated that only around 60 unnumbered examples of this series were made.
He confirmed to Edward Bramah that he had been inspired by a British Museum (Chinese!) exhibition catalogue in the early 1970s and this is related in Edward Bramah's book "Novelty Teapots - 500 Years of Art and Design" page 116 alongside the illustration no. 269
