Shelley China Cake / Sandwich Plate - Mabel Lucie Attwell (Sold)

Stock No. 416

A 1920s / 1930s Shelley cake or sandwich plate designed by Mabel Lucie Attwell. These Mabel Lucie Attwell large size plates from the 1920s / 1930s are scarce. This example's design is also quite scarce and bears the inscription " A Fairy Boat To Take Us Away, To The Land Where Mermaids Love To Play". Condition is very good with little wear. No damage or restoration at all . Printed marks for Shelley (1920s / 1930s).

Although Shelley produced Mabel Lucie Attwell's designs up to 1939, Boo-Boos (the little green fairy/elfin folk) were phased out of the designs in the later 1930s. Some of these old designs did re-surface on Shelley china after the war for a few years, but using different ceramic body shapes in some cases and a revised colour palate in others. Those later examples are marked "fine bone china" in the Shelley backstamp, which distinguish this and other pre-war examples that are just marked with the plain Shelley backstamp.
