Boo Boo cruet / condiment set designed by Mabel Lucie Attwell
Stock No. 488
This is a genuine cruet / condiment set designed by
Mabel Lucie Attwell
and of a small number produced by Shelley in the 1920s/1930s, comprising a salt cellar, a pepper pot and a mustard pot and lid, all three shaped as 'magic' mushrooms which are seated in circular recesses on a green glazed tray, with the figure of a "Boo Boo" (a green clothed fairy/elf) peeping out from behind a mushroom.
Although Mabel Lucie Attwell pre war tea wares are now fairly scarce in their own right, this Mabel Lucie Attwell cruet / condiment set really is incredibly scarce - far more so than either of her 1920s teasets and much of her other teaset china (with very few exceptions which include some of the original pre-war figures of children and Boo Boos and a very few other rarely found pieces). This is only the second set we have found in the last 25 years!
Condition is very good.
Marked to base of tray with the pre-war Shelley backstamp (earlier than 1939)
Dimensions :
Tray - max. diameter : 6 inches
Tray - max height 3.5 inches
( cf. Gifts For Good Children vol. 2 by Maureen Batkin, page 154.)
